Alberta Cougar Management
2014  Conference Proceeding

Cougar populations in Alberta had undergone significant decline and range contraction as a result of prey decline and direct persecution over the last century. More recently, from the time they were first declared a big game species in 1971, cougar populations have increased in numbers and expanded in distribution. Cougar management has been adjusted through the 1900's and 2000's to reflect the growing populations, with new hunting areas and seasons added as cougars continue to expand their range. In 2015, cougar management in Alberta reflects a need to balance cougar conservation with strong public sentiment that opposes the presence of cougars in rural residential and agricultural landscapes.
